WELCOME! This course takes a deep dive into Islamic philosophy (falsafa) and mysticism (tasawwaf, Sufism) through a close study of five of the most globally influential thinkers, mystics, and reformers in the Islamic world, whose influence reached far beyond Islamic and Arab philosophy: Al Ghazali, Ibn Arabi, Mulla Sadra, Jalal ud-din Rumi, and Muhammad Allama Iqbal.
Through their work we will explore key philosophical concerns about the nature of God, God’s knowability, human nature, enlightenment, ethics, epistemology, habit formation, the imagination, orthodoxy, heresy, the afterlife, the mid-body-soul relationship, sin and virtues, and the forms and possibilities of resistance to tyranny and injustice.
